Watching the Flames and Oilers game last night there was a moment when I swear I saw Olli Jokinen on the ice feebley backchecking. I had to rub my eyes for a second and see if what I was seeing was true. It turned out I was wrong, it was Dennis Wideman gliding back into position after another errant turnover resulted in an Edmonton break away. Dennis “Always Shoots” Wideman needs to be benched. Just using the eye test you can see he has started skating like an old man on the ice. He does not have the speed or skill to play in the NHL anymore. However sometimes the good old eye test is not enough so lets look at some corsi stats.
Above are the Corsi stats for last year. As you can see Wideman’s possession stats are almost at the bottom. He is tied with Egghead and just slightly better than Kris Russell (who took a lot of abuse this off season and lost a lot of money because of his Corsi stats). Every other defenseman for the Flames is above Wideman. Keep in mind Wideman is making over 5 million dollars this year! Time to send him to the press box and let Kulak play!
